The vote was held as the ruling SWAPO party faced its strongest challenge yet in 34 years since independence from South African rule. This time around, SWAPO, whose roots are in the young country's independence struggle, fielded Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who hopes to become the country and region's first female leader.
