Terrorism bill scales through second reading in House of Reps

A bill to repeal Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 and replace with (Prevention and Prohibition) bill has passed second reading in the House of Representatives. Measures to combat kidnapping and hijacking were incorporated in it.

A bill to repeal Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 and replace with (Prevention and Prohibition) bill on Tuesday, May 8, passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

According to Kayode Oladele who sponsored the bill, measures to combat kidnapping and hijacking were incorporated into the new bill, Vanguard reports.

NAIJ.com notes that Oladele stated that the bill would provide measures for suppressing financing of terrorism in the country.

He also said that with the bill in place, Nigeria will effectively implement international instruments on the prevention and combating of terrorism.

Oladele added: "Several fundamental changes were incorporated into the revised bill to ensure the domestication of international counter-terrorism conventions and protocols ratified by Nigeria in compliance with certain UN Security Council resolutions.

"The expansion of the definition of what constitutes acts of terrorism led to the improvements made to sections 12 and 13 of the bill to incorporate any weapon, explosive or other lethal device to a terrorist group."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian House of Representatives, on Wednesday, April 18, condemned the attack on the Senate by suspected thugs.

The lower chamber described the attack as ?act of terrorism,? demanding an immediate investigation.
