Lawmakers talk tough, issue 21-days ultimatum to Police, IGP over sealing of Peace Corps office

The ultimatum by the House followed the recommendation of committee on public petitions which conducted an investigative hearing on the illegal closure of the PCN facilities and disobedience of court order by the police.

- The House of Representatives has issued an ultimatum on the Nigeria police and the inspector general of police

- The Police has been ordered to vacate the Peace Corps of Nigeria office within 21 days

- According to the lawmakers, the IGP has failed to honour series of invitation sent to him by the House committee on public petition on the PCN matter

Members of the House of Representatives have issued an ultimatum on the Nigeria police and the  inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris over the sealing of the Peace Corps of Nigerian office.

The lawmakers gave the police 21 days to vacate and unseal the Peace Corps of Nigeria office located at number 57, Iya Abubakar Crescent, off Alex Ekwueme street, opposite Jabi lake, Abuja.

The ultimatum by the House followed the recommendation of committee on public petitions which conducted an investigative hearing on the illegal closure of the PCN facilities and disobedience of court order by the police.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of Federal High Court, Abuja, had on November 9, 2017, ordered the police to unseal the office of the PCN.

The court in its ruling also awarded N12.5 million damages against the police and in favour of the corps.

Also, on January 15, Justice John Tsoho of the same Federal High Court ruled that the police should vacate the PCN office.

While presenting the report to the House on Wednesday, May 9, the chairman of the House committee on public petitions, Nkem Abonta, said the IGP failed to honour series of invitation sent to him.

Abonta said the committee also obtained a document which showed that, the attorney general of the  federation, Abubakar Malami, had in a letter advised the IGP to honour the various court orders on the matter, "in absence of any appeal or valid stay of execution".

He said a legal officer who represented the IGP at the hearing also committed perjury by failing to produce document to proof a stay of execution on the matter.

He said the legal officer "lied under oath that there was a valid stay of execution", but when time was given that he produced a proof of stay, he could not produce any.

He added that should Nigeria continue in this manner, it would only spell doom for Nigerian democracy and give room to anarchy.

Further adopting the recommendation of the committee, the House urged Police to comply with the subsisting court orders and the instruction from the AGF.

The House said the police have 21 days from the commencement of Wednesday's plenary, to vacate the properties of Peace Corps.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Umar Farouk Umar, had appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to rescind on his rejection of the Peace Corp Bill.

Commending the organisation for its doggedness and for conducting itself peacefully by resorting to rule of law and advocacy in pursuing its goals, the Emir said as a father, he would look into the demands of the Corps with a view to making the Bill see the light of the day.
